Lucas Spence, Springfield: The senior three-time All-Delco was the driving force behind the Cougars’ run to the program’s first District One title. His finest hour came in the District One semifinal when he devastated Central Bucks East for seven goals. He added two goals in the title-game win over Conestoga. The All-America and Central League co-MVP shook off a sluggish start to the season to finish with 64 goals and 30 assists, his totals for goals and points each landing third in Delco. For his career, Spence scored a program-best 294 points. Spence will continue his career at Lehigh.

Cougars Come Up Short

Springfield LAX 1

There were tears and hung heads as Springfield filed off A.G. Cornog Stadium Tuesday evening. But there was something more behind the initial sadness of the Cougars’ 12-5 dismissal from the PIAA Semifinals at the hands of Radnor.

For whatever disappointment understandably lingered, the Cougars (19-5) also carried an underlying and undeniable sense of pride off the field. And while the journey ended one game short of where they hoped it to culminate, that does little to tarnish what was accomplished along the way.

Putting Springfield’s loss in perspective requires context as to the challenge set out before them. To win the District One and PIAA titles back-to-back mandates nine straight victories. That’s nine consecutive, next-to-perfect outings without an easy opponent in the bunch.

Seeding Set

Following a school-record 19-1 regular season, Chichester earned the No. 1 seed in next week’s District One Class AAA tournament

Chichester seniors Maddie Thornton, left, and Meghan Wimmer embrace after Wimmer escaped a bases-loaded jam to close out a 1-0 shutout of Villa Maria in last year’s District One Class AAA quarterfinal. This year, Wimmer and Thornton — now the team’s starting third baseman — led the Eagles to the No. 1 seed in the tournament as they vie for the program’s first District One title.

Despite its unblemished record, Springfield (19-0) is No. 4 in the District One Class AAAA tournament. With the new power-rankings system, which determined the entire breakdown of seedings, the Cougars finished behind North Penn (3), Perkiomen Valley (2) and Neshaminy (1).

Springfield and the rest of the top nine seeds receive a first-round bye. The Cougars play either No. 13 Pennsbury or No. 20 Wednesday, May 20.
